When I started on my journey to get healthier I had zero intention of looking the way that I look now. I just knew that I didn’t want to get dementia like my mom. Physically, I probably looked okay. I didn’t weigh much more than I do now, but I couldn’t go on a hike, run, or bike ride without feeling exhausted. I was also quite puffy and struggled with migraines and IBS. I just wanted to feel better.

The reason that this is on my mind today is that over the past few weeks I have heard people talking about my body behind my back. It’s a weird thing to overhear someone talking about you and the general assumption is that I exercise just so that I can look the way I do.

Nope.

It took me a little while to wrap my brain around how I felt about hearing those conversations, and I came to the conclusion that I don’t really give a fuck. I don’t take care of myself so that I can look the way that I look.

And I hope you don’t either. Here’s why…

Ugh, what a drag to work for vanity. The motivation has to be hard to keep up because sometimes you just don’t care what you look like, and the path to your physical appearance goals will likely be a long one.

It’s so much better to work for joy, curiosity, longevity, and vitality.

You’re going to get old, you’re going to lose your looks. Vanity is overrated. There’s no satisfaction in it.

Good health supports you to explore the world, push your limits, love hard, and create the life that you want to create.

Vanity and your physical appearance pale in comparison to the joy you feel inside when you have energy, health, and you’re doing something physical that you just love.

I LOVE CrossFit for a number of reasons. It’s pushed me to become a better person and it continues to push me.

You don’t have to love CrossFit. Find something that you do love. Dance, do karate, rock climb, cycle – just move your body and participate in activities that make you feel curious to learn more and be/do better.

Couple that passion for movement with the mindset to fuel your body with foods that make you FEEL GOOD and you’re on the path to health.

Focus on How You Want to Feel

When you’re creating goals for yourself, instead of thinking about what size you want to be or how much weight you want to lose, think about how you want to feel. What do you want your body to be able to accomplish? Maybe you want to finally run a marathon or you want to master a pose in yoga or you want to be able to get a pull-up or 10 pushups or you just want to have more energy in the afternoon or you want to get rid of your pre-diabetes.

These are all amazing goals. You are going to look how you’re going to look. Age, genetics, and lifestyle all play a role in your appearance. Focusing on your appearance when setting goals is a harsh approach. Instead, consider setting your health goals based on how you want to feel and what you want to be able to do with your amazing body. Keep yours healthy and enjoy it!
